Read the place before judging the defect.
Expect long runs of late-Victorian and Edwardian brick terracing in town and in the surrounding villages — Wombwell, Hoyland, Royston, Cudworth — plus substantial council-built estates from the inter-war and post-war years, much of it now privately owned. Stone shows up in the older village cores and towards the Pennine edge at Penistone.
The survey questions are usually practical rather than exotic: roof coverings at end-of-life, cavity wall ties in the older brickwork, damp in solid-wall terraces, and the perennial coalfield question of movement history. Buyers here are often getting excellent value — the survey’s job is to make sure the bargain is real.
It is honest, well-priced housing, and it deserves honest surveying: what is a settled crack from a century of mining history, what is live movement, and what is just a Victorian terrace being a Victorian terrace.
