Weavers’ cottages and valley stone
The Holme Valley is minutes from Surveyology’s base, and its buildings are the practice’s favourite kind of puzzle: stone cottages and weavers’ houses that have stood on their hillsides for two or three centuries, each one altered by every generation that lived in it.

Classic Holme Valley stock is millstone grit: weavers’ cottages with their long upper windows, hillside terraces stepping down to the river, farmhouses and barns (many now converted) on the moor edges, and Victorian villas from the valley’s textile heyday. Almost all of it is solid-wall, lime-built construction on steep sites — buildings designed to breathe and shed water, frequently suffocated since by cement, gypsum and plastic paint.
Steep sites bring the usual valley physics: retained ground against rear walls, cellars and underdwellings cut into the hill, and surface water that arrives fast off the moors. Damp in these houses is nearly always a water-management story, not a “rising damp” story — and getting that diagnosis right is the difference between clearing gutters and pointlessly injecting chemicals into 300-year-old stone.
Buying in Holmfirth, Honley, Netherthong or New Mill means buying character — and character needs a surveyor who understands old solid-wall stone construction, rather than one who marks a 250-year-old cottage against a modern-house checklist.
