The local fabric
Read the place before judging the defect.
The town itself is classic Lancashire cotton-belt housing: dense brick and some stone terracing thrown up around the mills, with larger Victorian houses in Werneth and later estates spreading outwards. Much of it is solid, honest stock — but a century of Pennine-edge weather, plus decades of cement pointing and impermeable paints, has left plenty of walls holding moisture they should be shedding.
Saddleworth — Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross, Greenfield — is a different world: millstone-grit cottages and terraces on steep, exposed sites, many genuinely old, many altered repeatedly. These are breathing, solid-wall buildings on hillside ground; they need the survey questions asked in the right order, starting with where the water comes from and where the hill meets the house.
That range is exactly why local knowledge matters: a Werneth terrace and a Delph weaver’s cottage may be ten minutes apart and need entirely different surveying assumptions. Both get the same thing from Surveyology: evidence first, plain English throughout.
